Overview
- A web application for managing civil government vehicles, built during my internship at the Ministry of Interior
- My first internship, and the first project I owned end to end
- Built from scratch on PHP and MySQL, with HTML, CSS and JavaScript on the front end
- No framework underneath it
What it does
Manages a civil government vehicle fleet and the records attached to it, replacing a process that was being handled manually.
How it was built
A deliberately plain stack, which at the time was the whole point:
- MySQL schema designed from the problem rather than generated
- PHP handling the request lifecycle and queries directly
- HTML, CSS and JavaScript for the interface
Without a framework, nothing is provided for free. Routing, validation, and the shape of the data all have to be decided explicitly, which is a slower but far more instructive way to learn what a framework is actually doing later.
What I took from it
This is the direct ancestor of the Laravel defect reporting system I built at OCP Group the following year. The same problems came back, authorisation, data modelling, admin interfaces, but the second time there was a framework available and I understood what it was saving me from.
